food for thought... and your stomach.

Okay, so as promised, here is the first of hopefully many tips to help you get that perfect body for prom night.  So what is the deal with food that is considered "healthy" or not? Courtesy of my brimming knowledge (and food and nutrition class), I can give you some basic facts.  Avoid an overdose of saturated fat, absolutely NO TRANS FATS (if you happen to stumble upon some), and load up on those fruits and veggies.  Oh, and for those of you who have been blindly mislead into thinking no carb diets are the best thing ever, please think again.  THOSE ARE PROBABLY THE WORST DIETS YOU CAN THINK OF.  Besides starvation of course.  We, as growing teens, need complex carbs more specifically, because they take way longer to digest which = happy, full people for longer periods of time.  Also, complex carbs mean more fibre that helps clean out your intestinal tract, so you won't feel like all that food is bloating your stomach.

As for meats and alternatives, go with extra lean as much as possible, or try turkey breast and chicken breast in place of ground beef.  You could even make this a fun event with the fam - try planning a menu for one week, with at least one rest day where you can order in, and see what fun meals you guys can come up with.

Speaking of which, take-out does not have to be unhealthy!!! Ever heard of Pizza Pizza?  Well they have this thing called multigrain crust, and hey, they kinda have a billion veggies to choose from, plus cheese that gives you protein (you don't need excesses of it) and yummy tomato sauce.  So guess what?? That pizza that I just described is all the food groups you need (add some meat or something if you want), and their dough has NO TRANS FATS, so no worries.

Basically, just remember to eat complex carbs, including whole grains, and veggies that are bright colours, like dark green and bright orange.  The same goes for fruits.  Pick things that remind you of a colourful rainbow.  And you don't need to cut out all saturated fat, because you kind of need some to keep your body happy.  Also, eat frequent small meals instead of huge prolonged meals.  Or else you might just find yourself gorging and fitting as much food as you can in your mouth in five minutes.  Your body needs at least 20 minutes to half an hour to know it is full, so just calm down with the munchies.  And there is this wonderful thing called metabolism.  It tends to work faster when you eat smaller meals at frequent intervals.  Just keep things in moderation and you should have a rockin' bod in no time.

mmm, so much food.

divine intervention

Hey
Well to all of you who don't know my little brother his name is Abdou and today he graced me with a talent that only God could have given someone. He was making an Eggo waffle and as I walked in he said ,"HEY watch this!" So I did thinking that it was going to be some stupid little trick. I WAS WRONG! He put a butter knife underneath the waffle and flipped it RIGHT INTO THE TOASTER!!!! I'm not gonna lie but this was more amazing than Canada winning gold for the first time. I mean I don't even think Jesus could have done this! It was amazing. So when I asked him to do it again, it being a one time deal, the trick went horribly wrong and the waffle landed in the sink in a pile of god knows what. Well that's all folks!

this is why we don't respect americans.

Since when are Terry Fox and Michael J Fox's moms the same person?? That's what I asked myself when I heard NBC announcers had been commenting on how "proud Michael J Fox's mom must have been, having her son run across Canada with only one leg."  Are you serious? Are you for real Unites States?  I mean, it's bad enough you think we all live in igloos and ride our polar bears to school and work, but come on, do you guys know anything about Canadian achievements?  I sure hope Terry Fox's mom doesn't find you.  That would just be awkward.  I must admit I got a good laugh out of the whole thing though.

TERRY FOX.

MICHAEL J. FOX.

are we good now people? ;)

operation: PROM NIGHT

promHere comes the br- wait, no, wrong occasion.  Okay, Char, Fatima and I (mostly Fatima), had another random (maybe not so much) idea to go on a diet/health kick/lent sacrifice/etc. in honour of our prom which is almost 3 months away now.  It kinda started today? and so far it had been good, mostly me mooching off Fatima for her healthy food and running around the school calling it exercise.  I am trying though, so that's a start at least?

So in honour of all you girls out there who want to look drop dead gorgeous for all those handsome dates of yours, remember that you should want to look good for yourself first and foremost.  When you look and feel good on the inside and out, then that's a sign of real happiness.

Good luck to us, and feel free to stay updated with our tips and tricks for staying healthy in the up and coming weeks.

Stay tuned!

twi con??

So I was lying in bed this morning... when I heard Carter of KISS FM announce that "if you are a huge twilight fan, you better be sitting down for this news".  Seeing as I was half asleep, I didn't care either way, although I have to admit the news did peak my interest.  So for all of you twilight fans (I know you are out there, I still love the series at least), yes, there is indeed an "all things twilight" conference coming to Ottawa this summer.  Of course, there will be no Taylor Lautners or Robert Pattinsons, but there will be Emily (Sam's fiancee) and some guy from True Blood.  So in my opinion, I don't really see the point in going, but maybe you will.

After all, Edwards and Jacobs are attractive no matter what form they are in.

TAKE THAT DALE BEGG-SMITH!

Wishing you never left Canada now are ya Mr. Dale Begg-Smith? How does it feel to be second next to your great ol' home of Canada? Crushed into an insignificant silver medal? Feeling that downfall of the "Oh I'm so great, I'm better than everyone else attitude?????

For you guys who don't know what i'm talking about, (you must be living under a rock in a hole way in the back of an isolated desert island) MEN'S FREESTYLE SKIING!!!!

Alex Bilodeau of Canada won gold! Over reigning champion Dale Begg-Smith. This is Canada's first gold medal on home soil!!!!! If you ever get a chance, watch the story of how Bilodeau came to be a champion skier. His story is so sweet as his inspiration is his handicapped brother.

Go Canada Go! Move on over Dale, the new champ's in town. =D

valentines day? please...

Wow okay, so it's been a verrry crazy week as Fatima said, not much time in there for blogging.  All I have to say is thank goodness for random holidays (FAMILY DAYY!).  Take that U.S, hehe.  Okay, so first of all... I GOT ACCEPTED TO GUELPH!  For those of you (probably most) that don't know, I have been going on and on about Guelph for like 2 years and how it is my dream school etc.  They have impeccable timing, because I came home to the "CONGRATULATIONS!" package the day before my birthday.  Yup, it's official now, as of February 12, 2010, I am now an adult.  So many things, voting, R rated movies... I won't mention the "other" good stuff that comes along with it.

On the downside... I found out the guy I have liked for quite some time now is going out with one of my other co-workers.  So yeah, that was a bit heartbreaking, especially since it was the day before valentine's day, (aka his birthday) and the day after my birthday.  But that's life I guess... a girl can always dream, right?

Anyways, this week has been quite interesting, but now I am going to go blog for school, yes courses can actually have blogging as an assignment believe it or not, so I will hopefully post more soon!

I will leave you guys with pics from my unbelievably awesome birthday at Kelsey`s!!

like i said, fun times.

Happy Chinese New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forget Valentine's Day, break out the red clothing for Chinese New Year! This year its the year of the Tiger so get those black and orange stripes out and roar.

Here's some "believed" personality traits from chiff.com:

Years
1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022

Tiger personality traits
One of the most dynamic signs in the Chinese zodiac, Tigers are by turns fascinating, commanding, and exasperating.

They are patient but short-tempered, calm but rebellious, petty but noble, fearsome but affectionate, free spirits but fiercely territorial.

With their many & various personality traits, Tigers are also - not surprisingly - noted for a marked reluctance to make up their minds.

2010 Year of the Tiger
What makes them magnetic and commanding figures is the absolute loyalty and affection they show for those they love. With a natural air of authority, Tigers easily earn the respect and admiration of those who love them in return.

While domesticated Tigers are quite happy among familiar surroundings, they are just as apt to fly off on an adventure at a moment's notice. Unpredictable and emotional, they can become quite fearless when standing up for themselves or others, and often hold definitive views on how to right the wrongs of society.

At work, Tigers show natural leadership ability, but prefer to work alone. They usually excel as business managers, social activists, explorers, or travel writers.

Tigers are most compatible with : Horse, Dragon, Dog

Famous people born in the Year of the Tiger: Emily Bronte, Sheryl Crow,
Tom Cruise, Emily Dickinson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jay Leno, Karl Marx, Marilyn Monroe, Marco Polo, Beatrix Potter, Queen Elizabeth II, Jon Stewart

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!!  恭喜發財 , 新年快樂

Inappropriate Timing

Hey guys it's been some hell-of-a-week so blogging has taken a back seat. Anyway, a funny memory came to my mind as I was attempting calculus homework. When strolling through the always safe Bayshore mall, I walked through a couple of security guards. Nothing really happened except for the fact that the cops were bragging about beating up people! Yeah hearing, ``I totally rammed into the guys face with my fist and broke his nose,`` isn't the most comforting thing to hear. I mean don`t get me wrong it must have been pretty cool to nail the guy right in the kisser but brag about it during dollar beer night at a sports bar. Not in a mall where the little boys would copy everything cops do. I don`t know maybe it`s me but I feel like avoiding malls for a while.
